1977年に登場した「WAFFLE RACER」は、NIKEのランニングシューズの歴史を語るうえで欠かせないモデルのひとつ。開発のきっかけとなったのは、共同創業者ビル・バウワーマンの独創的な発想でした。1971年、より優れたグリップ力を持つシューズを模索していた彼は、妻バーバラ氏が使っていたワッフルメーカーの格子状の模様に着目。ソールの試作にワッフルメーカーを使っていたところ、型がくっついて開かなくなってしまったという逸話も残されています。この発想から生まれたワッフルソールは、ランニングシューズの進化に大きな影響を与えました。2017年には誕生40周年を記念して復刻。本作は2017年製。ナイロンとスウェードを組み合わせたアッパーに、ブラックをベースとしたカラーリングとオレンジのスウッシュが映える、印象的な配色が魅力です。落ち着いたブラックに鮮やかなオレンジがアクセントを加え、クラシックなランニングシューズの雰囲気を残しながらも、スタイリングの主役として存在感を放つ一足に仕上がっています。使用感はありますが、ソールのすり減りも少なく、まだまだ履いていただける一足です。

The “WAFFLE RACER,” introduced in 1977, is one of the essential models in the history of NIKE running shoes. The impetus for its development came from an ingenious idea by co-founder Bill Bowerman. In 1971, while searching for a shoe with superior traction, he noticed the grid-like pattern on the waffle iron his wife, Barbara, was using. There’s even an anecdote that when he used the waffle maker to create a prototype sole, the mold got stuck and wouldn’t open. The waffle sole born from this idea had a major impact on the evolution of running shoes. In 2017, the shoe was reissued to commemorate its 40th anniversary. This pair was manufactured in 2017. The upper combines nylon and suede, featuring a striking color scheme where the black base and orange Swoosh stand out. The vibrant orange adds a pop of color to the subdued black, resulting in a pair that retains the classic running shoe aesthetic while still commanding attention as the centerpiece of any outfit. Although it shows some signs of wear, the sole has minimal wear, making this a pair you can still enjoy wearing for a long time to come.
